today when we got home from our surprise lunch at dh's work. he made the duo two grilled cheese (i ate the crusts) and they also polished off a fruit salad. man-oh-man can they eat! must be all that energy they burn chasing each other around these days. now that miss thing is crawling, she takes no prisoners. in fact, she has started to head-butt her sister if she tries to swipe her toy. i think i may have to work on discouraging that move. (she clocked me last night and just giggled.) so do we love scout or what?! she and her co-workers at the glorious village wools selected these 8 skeins and sent them off to me. yep, japan to new mexico to ohio. coolness. the plan is to make each of the girls a small pinwheel lovey-sized blanket.
8 years ago we met when she came to my school as a substitute teacher. she had moved to this area with her soon-to-be-second-husband and three children. we clicked right away, probably because if there was ever anyone more sentimental or optimisitic or fun than me it was she. she is 13 years my senior and became one of my dearest friends ever. time has been indefinitely suspended because to me she will forever be 42 and vice versa i'm a sprightly 29 (love that). thank goodness for her support when i was pregnant and choosing to become a SAHM, because not too many of our colleagues could understand why i would "do that." (just an aside: it would break my heart into a gazillion pieces if i were not here to experience the daily adventures of the duo and dh and i are so thankful that we are able to make it work). i know staying home with your kiddos is not for everyone, but the pressure to jump back into teaching was heavy. all but one of my friends returned to work right away; but many of my friends in their late 40s/50s were SAHMs back in the day and were so enthusiastically supportive, like boom-boom.
b.c. - before children - i often imagined what life would be like once they arrived. words cannot describe how incredible this past year has been with the du
o. they started out so tiny and fragile. they were 6 weeks early and not quite ready for the world, so they had to stay in the nicu for 4 and 5 weeks. and once they made it home it was all nurse-nurse-burp-burp-play-play-snooze-snooze-change-change and repeat about 8 times a day. exausting, yes. rewarding, for sure.
i love vermont. got my very first teaching job in vermont. and my very first apartment. how lucky did i think i was to find a 2-bedroom flat for $400 a month. so what if my teaching position was part-time and after all the deductions for healthcare i only made about $250 a month. so i worked a second job at a ski resort, too. not many other waitresses with a master's degree, but no one held it against me. and because i signed a year's lease, my landlord gave me a free 19" color tv. it was a little too good to be true, but i didn't care; i was out on my own nestled amongst beautiful lake champlain and the breathtaking green mountains. ahhh. didn't bother me that much that it turned out my landlord was a dealer and got arrested a few months later,
or that my place was in burlington's version of the 'hood, or that my furnace caught fire because a bird built a nest in it, or that your eyeballs felt like they were going to freeze and pop out because it was sooooo cold, ... i was still happy to finally be out on my own making my own way, and pretty much dodging curve balls as they came a'flying.
don't you just love it when autumn rolls in with that chill in the air, the leaves become more vibrant with each day until *snap* they're all down and not only do you have nothing but bare trees in the landscape, but you also have a hell of a lot of yardwork to do.

my mom was over yesterday hanging with the duo and then stayed for dinner. after the girlies went down for nighty-night, we headed back to the kitchen to finish up dinner. whole wheat mini baguettes were baking away in the oven, the house smelled tremendous as we sipped wine and dropped the little meatballs one-by-one into wedding soup. i really didn't think much of it since i love cooking and all that jazz. (probably would have been a terrific candidate for "the next food network star" last year but i was a little busy with newborn twins at the time.) within half an hour we were eating and having a merry old time.
spend each day with the two best little people i've ever known? sign me up! and sometimes i can knit when/if they're napping? yes, please!
the couple who owns our favorite italian restaurant were soooo nice when the girls were born and even sent us a bottle of wine from their vineyard in tuscany! (we love their chianti so much we always have at least one bottle on hand.)
