  boy, did i cry today!!!
i call them her magic shoes - the pattern is "happy daisies".

today at PT, little miss thing got her special braces for her feet, rotating them such that she can support her own weight. magical they are, indeed.
get a load of this action:

after she was fitted, the PT assisted her WALKING TO ME! i am crying (again) right now thinking of it. AMAZING! AMAZING! these kiddos are so incredible - it's like something awakened inside them once they finally gained mobility. now that they are in and of the world, they interact so much with all that they encounter and are so enthusiastic about life.
truly a blessing.
make that blessings.

thank you all for your kind friendship and support and humor and for being there. here.
you mean so much to me.
xoxo

  oh baby baby!
the mailbox was STUFFED today when we got home from our surprise lunch at dh's work. he made the duo two grilled cheese (i ate the crusts) and they also polished off a fruit salad. man-oh-man can they eat! must be all that energy they burn chasing each other around these days. now that miss thing is crawling, she takes no prisoners. in fact, she has started to head-butt her sister if she tries to swipe her toy. i think i may have to work on discouraging that move. (she clocked me last night and just giggled.) so do we love scout or what?! she and her co-workers at the glorious village wools selected these 8 skeins and sent them off to me. yep, japan to new mexico to ohio. coolness. the plan is to make each of the girls a small pinwheel lovey-sized blanket.

ok, so listen.
i have heard about
koigu.
i thought, "yeah, it looks nice, but what's the biggie?" and then i saw it.
before i even removed it from the package, i could tell this IS the most glorious of yarns eh-va. and the colors-oh-the-colors! here's a better pic of the little beauties lined up for duty. koigasm indeed! you don't know any better before, but then you do. and you never want to go back to crappy sock yarn. oh no.

and lest you think it's all talk and no action around these knitting parts, i have a progress shot of
my don't-call-it-a-poncho (
pattern here).
i'm halfway done and can happily report that it promises satisfaction in any season. and the bamboo is supersilky.
for my pleasure.

  sweet and sour
what a fun day! dh had a big catering thing, which means it was going to be an all-girls-saturday, so the duo and i headed out into the countryside to visit our dear friend, boom-boom, who recently moved into their new-the-them house. let me tell you a little bit about this woman, because she is incredible....

8 years ago we met when she came to my school as a substitute teacher. she had moved to this area with her soon-to-be-second-husband and three children. we clicked right away, probably because if there was ever anyone more sentimental or optimisitic or fun than me it was she. she is 13 years my senior and became one of my dearest friends ever. time has been indefinitely suspended because to me she will forever be 42 and vice versa i'm a sprightly 29 (love that). thank goodness for her support when i was pregnant and choosing to become a SAHM, because not too many of our colleagues could understand why i would "do that." (just an aside: it would break my heart into a gazillion pieces if i were not here to experience the daily adventures of the duo and dh and i are so thankful that we are able to make it work). i know staying home with your kiddos is not for everyone, but the pressure to jump back into teaching was heavy. all but one of my friends returned to work right away; but many of my friends in their late 40s/50s were SAHMs back in the day and were so enthusiastically supportive, like boom-boom.

but i digress (don't act surprised by that, either). anyhoo, boom-boom's son is very low-functioning autistic and needs constant supervision, and she has raised him and her two beautiful daughters in a home of love, humor, happiness, encouragement and pride. (her one daughter is a genetic couselor and the other is studying to become a nurse, inspired by their love of their brother). my friend would not change a single moment of her life, divorce and all, for anything, because it has brought her and her children incredible memories and joy. as you can see from the picture, she can work a happy yellow coat like nobody's business and how fab does that
scarf look on her, so perfect it was like nonokitty made that yarn for her.

it was such fun to hang out - not even the my vesper-bleu-hole-in-one could get me down. another plus to knitting footies: you have enough leftover yarn to make a spare.

  the duo are ONE
b.c. - before children - i often imagined what life would be like once they arrived. words cannot describe how incredible this past year has been with the duo. they started out so tiny and fragile. they were 6 weeks early and not quite ready for the world, so they had to stay in the nicu for 4 and 5 weeks. and once they made it home it was all nurse-nurse-burp-burp-play-play-snooze-snooze-change-change and repeat about 8 times a day. exausting, yes. rewarding, for sure.

and then today while watching them scarf down grilled chicken and asparagus between their "ba-ba-ba"s and "tickle-de-gaulle"s, i just couldn't help think, "look at 'em now!" i swear i must have cried at least 4 times today. so happy. so blessed. so in awe of life. and to think we ALL start out this way! how cool is that?!

and as if today wasn't wonderful enough, when the babes and i returned form our official "birthday lunch out", i found my mailbox stuffed with the reveal package from my secret pal -- read all about it here.

  snowsuits and citrus sections
i have lived in many different places in my lifetime, but my days have always been spent in a climate where the seasons change all around you, serving as a reminder that nothing is permanent. every thing develops and adapts and reacts and undergoes its own particular progression. what we see and experience in the world around us each day are tiny snapshots to be filed away as memories. and sometimes - if we're lucky - we smile as we think back upon a few.

like snowsuits. being bundled up so tight with just your nose and eyes exposed, practically mummified just to be able to scamper about in the snow. we had a big snowstorm here last week - over a foot before thanksgiving! so of course the duo was a' bundled in fleecey-goodness out there with pink noses mystified by seeing their breath in the air. awesome. every day i spend with them i am filled with such glee that this is my life. that i can be a part of these snapshots. to hear the giggles and squeals. to shhh-shhh them asleep. and imagine their dreams of fluffy bunnies and snow angels. i shall never take this life for granted.

progress abounds in this snowy house. i completed the citrus-zigzag-scarf for gardener-sil (or girlfriend-with-new-yellow-coat). it all depends on what other projects work out and in what colors and designs. i'm mid-leaf in a loop-d-loop leaf scarf using taupe soy/silk for a friend and have 2 sets of father-son hats to make for family and friends, so i'm off, people - the postman just ding-donged which means that my kpixie package of aurora 4 & bulky are here for one of the hat sets - i'd better get to gettin'.

i wasn't planning on gushing in this post, but sometimes when i sit here mid-thought and typing away, i hear christmas piano music playing in the next room where the duo are napping and i get overwhelmed. and that's a very good thing.

  block party
i love vermont. got my very first teaching job in vermont. and my very first apartment. how lucky did i think i was to find a 2-bedroom flat for $400 a month. so what if my teaching position was part-time and after all the deductions for healthcare i only made about $250 a month. so i worked a second job at a ski resort, too. not many other waitresses with a master's degree, but no one held it against me. and because i signed a year's lease, my landlord gave me a free 19" color tv. it was a little too good to be true, but i didn't care; i was out on my own nestled amongst beautiful lake champlain and the breathtaking green mountains. ahhh. didn't bother me that much that it turned out my landlord was a dealer and got arrested a few months later, or that my place was in burlington's version of the 'hood, or that my furnace caught fire because a bird built a nest in it, or that your eyeballs felt like they were going to freeze and pop out because it was sooooo cold, ... i was still happy to finally be out on my own making my own way, and pretty much dodging curve balls as they came a'flying.

it was like how no one tells you that when you knit any kind of lace pattern you end up with a bumpy-mumpy-looking pile of what looks like very little. but trust in yourself, i say. all will come out as it should be after blocking. and thank goodness. scarf #2 (of 3) was originally intended for irish-lawyer-sil, as green is her signature color and all... but i am reconsidering it for horticultural-sil instead, what with the fabulous leaf-motif. we shall see how scarf #3 works up and then decide who is lucky enough to get what come christmastime.

by the way, this artyarns supermerino is super-duper, a pleasure to work with and the handpainted hues really are beautiful. i wasn't sure if it would look too bright green, but it is more reminiscent of vermont in late summer. just a few leaves starting to turn foreshadowing the glorious foliage to come.

  baby, it's cold outside
don't you just love it when autumn rolls in with that chill in the air, the leaves become more vibrant with each day until *snap* they're all down and not only do you have nothing but bare trees in the landscape, but you also have a hell of a lot of yardwork to do.

i remember in fall when we were kids how we'd all rake and rake the leaves up into the most perfect crispy mountains, and then take turns jump-jumping into them. you could make a whole day out of raking leaves and what fun it was, wheel barrow racing around the yard, hot cocoa breaks, yum. dh is funny about that, doesn't want the duo to get cooties or something. maybe we'll play in the leaves when he's at work and just neglect to tell him about our adventures.

these days as it is getting chillier, i'm soooo not about raking leaves, oh no. these hands have a higher calling... the duo needs to stay warm during our daily walks and these bonnets from last minute knitted gifts are the perfect solution. "what are you wearing?" the strollers on the block call. "karaoke and kid classic," the duo replies a-giggle. the pattern called for the rowan, but i do so adore the soy/silk loveliness of southwest trading's karaoke that it had to be used for one of the bonnets. can't get enough.

and me? how do i keep cozy? with my kint-one-in-a-day-oh-so-cheery vesper socklets! how can you not love them! used
this pattern (thanks for the tip, kaity) with size 4 dpns and it was cake, especially since i had done those practice socks a few days back. i thank lolly and the gazillions of sock enthusiasts for inspiring me to join in on socktoberfest - i've done two pair in a week and have added to my sock yarn stash already. even plan to make the duo their very own vesper socks with the leftovers... to match their mama, of course.

  fat taco
couldn't decide whether to order chinese or midwest-faux-mexican tonight... ended up opting for our local chipotle ripoff (as if chipotle isn't a ripoff... aren't they owned by mcdonalds?) anyway, i MUST commit to a serious diet and exercise regimen effective tomorrow because we ate nachos and overstuffed burritos while sitting on our asses watching the biggest loser. ironic, no?

i used to get up for work at 5:30am every morning pre-kids, so it shouldn't be so tough to get up an hour before they do to get in a little workout. it's either that or during their morning nap and we all know that just won't do. no no no. that's when i knit, have a coffee and watch martha stewart try to be all casual. she has lightened up a bit, though. must be the billions.

secret pal o' mine was kind enough to send me this gorgeous ball of karaoke soy/silk along with a pattern for fingerless gloves from southwest trading. it called for one ball and they weren't kidding; there was a 2.5" strand left over and that was IT - good design.
i am in love with this yarn, how the colors blend so deliciously into one another, the way it glides through your fingers, and the warmth! the whole project worked up in about 3 hours while chillin' with the babes. i already ordered some more from knitpixie to make top-down-soy-silk-goodness for the duo. they have developed quite a fascination with dpns, better keep an inventory.

  Faboo and Fiery
my mom was over yesterday hanging with the duo and then stayed for dinner. after the girlies went down for nighty-night, we headed back to the kitchen to finish up dinner. whole wheat mini baguettes were baking away in the oven, the house smelled tremendous as we sipped wine and dropped the little meatballs one-by-one into wedding soup. i really didn't think much of it since i love cooking and all that jazz. (probably would have been a terrific candidate for "the next food network star" last year but i was a little busy with newborn twins at the time.) within half an hour we were eating and having a merry old time.

i told her how my good friend D made fun of me for my "betty crockerness" last week when i used my crock pot for beef stew. mom just laughed, "look at yourself... we're eating homemade bread, homemade soup and you're wearing a sweater you just knit. it is funny and it is Fabulous!" woo hoo! guess i've embraced this SAHM thing, huh. wouldn't trade it for the world, either. spend each day with the two best little people i've ever known? sign me up! and sometimes i can knit when/if they're napping? yes, please!

so now i can finally take a shower. this little number is it, the bees' knees...the fiery bolero. i have wanted to make it ever since seeing it out there on
heather's blog. it seemed the perfect little something to keep cozy on a chilly day, the just-right coverup for any season, layer it over a favorite tank or a crisp oxford, IT. but i couldn't find an issue of summer '05 IK to save my life, and the elusive pattern existed only in my dreams for quite some time. until now. she is mine all mine. the blue sky alpaca/silk in slate (from knit pixie, of course)is amazing, so soft against your skin and its impressive warmth with such a fine gauge is sneaky and i love that. love love love the short-row-shawl-collar effect, too. it has held me in knitting captivity for the past few days, and there was a point when i actually didn't think i'd see the light of day again, but then it was done, just like that. now we're free and Fabulous and ready to hit the town.

  bambina
the couple who owns our favorite italian restaurant were soooo nice when the girls were born and even sent us a bottle of wine from their vineyard in tuscany! (we love their chianti so much we always have at least one bottle on hand.)

their beautiful little girl was born last week and dh had the nice idea, "how about we give her a hat and booties." we? like he would/can knit them... ahhh, no, i don't think so. but it really was such a cool idea, so i set out to at least make the booties. they went so quickly (size 5s, quick?) and even got a hat done! the sock yarn made superfun stripes in great colors for their little one who is blessed with an oh-so-stylish mother and an amazing-chef father.

last night we went there for a REAL DATE - yay us! at dinner we easily finished off a bottle of the chianti and then sipped limoncello instead of dessert. sooooooo good, even the citrusy burn. aids in digestion, they say. i could have cared less, feeling nooo pain. afterwards...now get ready for the really romantic part of the evening...we walked over to the k-mart and bought 3 packages of diapers. nighty-night, kids.
